Porcelain Veneers in Turkey
Veneers can change the color and shape of front teeth with a thin layer of ceramic. This page explains how they work, what tooth preparation involves, how many visits to plan in Istanbul and when another option may suit you better.

What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells, often around half a millimeter thick, bonded to the front of teeth to change their color, shape or length. Most veneers require removing a thin layer of enamel, which cannot be reversed. Fitting typically takes two visits several days apart while a dental laboratory makes the veneers.
How do veneers work?
A porcelain veneer is a thin, custom-made shell of ceramic that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth to change how it looks: its color, shape, length or the size of small gaps.
Why enamel is prepared
To keep a veneer from looking bulky, the dentist usually removes a thin layer of enamel from the front of the tooth, often around 0.3–0.7 mm. Bonding to enamel is stronger than bonding to the dentin beneath it, so a careful plan keeps preparation within enamel.
That preparation is permanent. Even minimal-prep veneers alter the surface, so in practice a veneered tooth will always need a veneer or crown. This is the main reason to be sure before starting.
Veneer materials
- Layered porcelain Built up by hand in thin layers; very lifelike but more delicate.
- Lithium disilicate A pressed or milled glass-ceramic, widely known as E.max; strong and translucent.
- Composite resin Sculpted on the tooth in one visit; less preparation, but stains and chips more readily.
Veneers are the main building block of a Hollywood smile makeover. Where a tooth is heavily filled or broken, a zirconia crown may be the sounder choice.
Veneers at a glance
- Anesthesia
- Local, where enamel is prepared
- Enamel removed
- Often around 0.3–0.7 mm from the front surface
- Appointments
- Usually two, several days apart, within one stay
- Typical time in Istanbul
- Often around 5–7 days
- Typical lifespan
- Porcelain often 10 years or more; composite usually less
- Reversible
- No, once enamel is prepared
How do veneers compare with crowns and bonding?
| Porcelain veneers | Crowns | Composite bonding | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covers | Front surface and biting edge | The whole tooth | Part or all of the front surface |
| Tooth preparation | Thin layer of enamel, usually | Reduced on every side | Little or none |
| Reversible | No, in most cases | No | Often largely |
| Visits | Usually two, with lab time | Usually two, with lab time | Often one |
| Typically suits | Healthy teeth with color or shape concerns | Weak, heavily filled or root-treated teeth | Small chips, gaps and edges |
Who are veneers suitable for?
Chipped or worn edges
Small, uneven or spaced teeth
When other care comes first
What happens at each veneer visit?
- 01
Consultation and design
Photos, X-rays and a scan are taken, and the number of veneers, shape and shade are discussed. - 02
Mock-up
A temporary resin mock-up lets you preview the planned shape on your own teeth and ask for changes. - 03
Preparation and scan
Under local anesthesia, a thin enamel layer is removed, the teeth are scanned and temporaries are fitted. - 04
Laboratory work
The veneers are made over several days. Avoid biting hard foods with the temporaries. - 05
Try-in
The veneers are tried in with a water-soluble paste so shape and color can be checked before bonding. - 06
Bonding and bite check
Each veneer is bonded, excess cement is removed and the bite is adjusted, including sideways movements.
How long does it take to adjust to veneers?
Most people eat normally within a day or two of bonding. Speech, especially “s” and “f” sounds, can feel different for a few days while the tongue adapts.
- First days Mild sensitivity and gum tenderness are common and usually settle.
- First week The tongue gets used to the new surfaces and any slight lisp fades.
- First month An edge that catches or an uneven bite usually needs only a small adjustment.
- Long term Brush, floss and avoid biting nails, ice or packaging.
A night guard is often advised for people who grind. Travel and accommodation questions are covered on the medical tourism page.
What are the risks and limits of veneers?
Veneers are a well-established cosmetic treatment, but they are neither reversible nor maintenance-free.
Common and usually short-lived
- Sensitivity Cold sensitivity after preparation, usually fading within days to weeks.
- Gum irritation Tender or slightly swollen gums around new edges while they settle.
- Adjustment A rough edge or bite contact that needs smoothing.
Less common
- Chipping or debonding Porcelain can chip and a veneer can come off, especially with grinding.
- Nerve inflammation Uncommon with enamel-only preparation; deeper preparation can lead to root canal treatment.
- Color mismatch Veneers do not whiten, so natural teeth that change color may no longer match.
- Replacement Veneers eventually wear or fail and need replacing, which means further work.
Veneers cannot correct a bad bite, gum disease or decay. A careful plan veneers only the teeth that need it, and if whitening or bonding would meet your goal, your dentist should say so. The dental treatment overview sets out the alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
How much do veneers cost in Turkey?
The cost of veneers depends on the number of teeth, the material chosen for each and any treatment needed beforehand, such as whitening, gum care or fillings. Composite and porcelain differ considerably. A personal quote follows the assessment, once your dentist has reviewed photos and X-rays and agreed a plan with you.
How many days do veneers take in Istanbul?
Porcelain veneers usually need two visits separated by several days of laboratory work, so many people plan roughly five to seven days in Istanbul. Composite veneers can often be finished in one or two appointments. Gum work or root canal treatment can extend the stay, and your dentist estimates the schedule before you book.
How many veneers will I need?
That depends on how many teeth show when you smile broadly and on your goals. Some people show six upper teeth, others eight or ten. Veneering only a few front teeth can look uneven next to darker neighbors, so shade planning and possibly whitening are discussed at the assessment.
Do veneers damage your teeth?
Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which does not grow back, so the tooth is permanently changed. When preparation stays within enamel and veneers are well bonded and maintained, the tooth underneath typically stays healthy. Over-preparation raises the risk of sensitivity and nerve problems, which is why conservative planning matters.
Should I choose porcelain or composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers resist staining and usually last longer, but they need laboratory time and enamel preparation. Composite veneers are sculpted directly, often with little or no preparation, and can be repaired, but they stain and chip more readily. The right choice depends on your teeth, bite and how much maintenance you accept.
Can I whiten my teeth after getting veneers?
Whitening lightens natural teeth but does not change the color of porcelain or composite veneers. If you want a lighter shade overall, whitening is usually done before veneers are made and the veneer shade is matched afterward. Whitening neighboring teeth later can leave veneers looking darker by comparison.
