Replacing teeth

Dental Implants in Turkey

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and gives a crown, bridge or denture a fixed base in the jawbone. For patients traveling to Istanbul, treatment is usually split into two visits a few months apart, with the healing in between done at home.

How do dental implants in Turkey work?

Dental implants in Turkey usually involve two visits: one to place titanium posts in the jawbone, then a healing period of roughly 3–6 months while the bone fuses with each post, and a second visit to fit the permanent crowns. Suitability depends on healthy gums, enough bone and general health, confirmed by a dentist.

What is a dental implant and how does it work?

A dental implant is a small screw-shaped post, usually titanium and sometimes zirconia, placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once bone has bonded to it, the post can carry a crown, a bridge or a denture.

Three parts, one tooth

  • Implant The post in the bone, taking the place of the natural root.
  • Abutment A small connector joining the implant to the visible tooth.
  • Crown The custom-made tooth, shaded to match its neighbors.

Why there is a healing period

Bone grows onto the implant surface over roughly 3–6 months, a process called osseointegration, which is why most plans involve two visits to Istanbul. Where bone is dense and the implant very stable, a temporary tooth can sometimes be attached on the day; your surgeon decides this during surgery.

When gums or bone need work first

An implant needs healthy gums and enough bone. Where the jaw has shrunk, a bone graft or, in the upper back jaw, a sinus lift may come first, adding months. Whole arches are covered on the All-on-4 full-arch implants page.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Missing teeth

One or several teeth missing

Implants can replace a single tooth, carry a bridge across several gaps or anchor a denture.
Bone

Enough jawbone, or open to a graft

A 3D scan shows whether bone is sufficient; if not, grafting may come first.
Health

Healthy gums and stable health

Gum disease is treated first, and diabetes should be well controlled before surgery.
Time

Able to plan two trips

The gap between visits is usually 3–6 months, so the plan must fit your calendar.

What happens during the implant procedure?

  1. 01

    Assessment and 3D scan

The dentist examines your mouth and takes a cone-beam CT scan to measure bone and locate nerves and sinuses.
  2. 02

    Treatment plan

Implant positions, any extractions or grafting, the final teeth and the visit schedule are agreed in writing.
  3. 03

    Placement (first visit)

Under local anesthesia, a precise channel is prepared in the bone, the implant is placed and the gum is stitched.
  4. 04

    Healing at home

Over roughly 3–6 months the bone fuses with the implant; a temporary tooth can often be worn meanwhile.
  5. 05

    Abutment and scans (second visit)

Stability is checked, the abutment is attached and digital scans are taken for the crown.
  6. 06

    Final crown and bite check

The crown is fitted, the bite adjusted and a cleaning and checkup plan agreed for home.

How long does implant recovery take?

Most people return to desk work within a day or two. The longer part of recovery is the bone healing over the following months.

  • Days 1–3 Swelling and soreness peak, usually eased by cold packs and the pain relief your dentist advises.
  • First two weeks Soft, lukewarm food, gentle salt-water rinses and no smoking.
  • Until the second visit Avoid biting hard food on the site and keep it very clean.
  • After the final crown Normal chewing, daily cleaning and regular checkups.

Short flights are usually fine a day or two after simple implant surgery; after a sinus lift you may need to wait longer and avoid blowing your nose. On long flights, drink water and move regularly; your surgeon sets the timing. Our medical travel guide covers transfers and accommodation.

What are the risks of dental implants?

Implant surgery is well established but still surgery: most side effects pass quickly, and serious complications are uncommon.

  • Infection Around the implant in the first weeks, usually treated with cleaning and sometimes antibiotics.
  • Nerve injury Numbness of the lip, chin or tongue after lower-jaw surgery, often temporary and rarely permanent.
  • Sinus problems An upper implant or sinus lift can irritate or perforate the sinus lining.
  • Peri-implantitis Inflammation of gum and bone around an implant, often linked to plaque and smoking.
  • Implant failure An implant that does not fuse, or loosens later, may need replacing after healing.

Who should wait or reconsider

Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes raise the risk of implant failure. Active gum disease, past radiation to the jaw, some bone medicines and heavy grinding need careful assessment, and implants usually wait until the jaw has stopped growing.

What implants cannot do

An implant does not treat gum disease elsewhere, and where bone and gum have receded the new tooth may look longer. Your dentist explains realistic outcomes at your dental assessment; the dental treatment overview covers other options, such as zirconia crowns for damaged teeth.

Frequently asked questions

How much do dental implants in Turkey cost?

The cost depends on how many implants you need, whether a bone graft or sinus lift is required, the type of crown, and any extractions or temporary teeth. Because these vary widely between patients, a personal quote follows the dentist’s assessment of your photos, X-rays or scan.

How many visits to Istanbul do dental implants need?

Most plans need two visits. The first, often around a week, covers the scan, any extractions and implant placement. After roughly 3–6 months of healing at home, a second visit fits the abutments and permanent crowns. A bone graft can lengthen the gap between the two visits.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

Placement is done under local anesthesia, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness and swelling are common for a few days afterward and usually settle with cold packs and standard pain relief. Pain that worsens after the third day should be reported, as it can signal infection.

Can I get an implant if I have lost bone?

Often, yes. A bone graft can rebuild a shrunken ridge before or during implant placement, and a sinus lift can add height in the upper back jaw. These steps may add several months of healing, and the 3D scan taken at your assessment shows whether either is needed.

How long do dental implants last?

With good home care, regular checkups and no smoking, an implant can last many years and often decades. The crown on top wears like any restoration and may eventually need replacing. Peri-implantitis is the main long-term threat, so cleaning around implants matters as much as cleaning natural teeth.

Can my dentist at home look after my implants?

Yes. A general dentist or hygienist can check and clean implants. Keep the treatment records you receive, including the implant system and component details, so your dentist can source matching parts if a screw or crown ever needs attention after you return home.
